I think we might do better than "non-profit" in finding a reassuring word for the Wikipedia Foundation. AFAIK all politic parties for example are non-profit, as is the Gates Foundation. --BozMo 18:56, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)Talk

BozMo, in the USA "non-profit" has a specific legal meaning. I don't think anybody uses it to be "reassuring". Maybe this word is not used in the UK. I think you use the expression "registered charity". I'm not sure if this has a similar meaning or not.

To say the Wikipedia is a "non-profit" is just to say an important and useful fact about it, as if we were to say that Labor in the UK is a political party.

If I misunderstood what you meant and I'm saying soemthing foolish here, sorry! I tought non profit means not done to earn money for leisure uses? jamie's secret admierer 00:28, 12 October 2006 (UTC)jamierulesReply

Nothing foolish, of course but love to know who you are? Anyway non-profit and not-for-profit in the UK is very widely used to mean non-commercial sector. Government and public sector jobs are often advertised as "NFP" so I am concerned it could be taken to mean public sector rather than charitable. I would prefer the expression "independent charitable trust" or similar which implies to me that it has a board of trustees who are obliged to govern it in the interests of the trust, not directed by other

By the way the political party in the UK is spelt "Labour"!!--BozMo 19:16, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Is there any particular reason why the simple Emglish article on Wikipedia proclaims Wikipedia to be Communism? And why is the page protected? Chrisgaffrey 12:55, 14 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unprotect

Drat. I registered to make an edit and it's protected. Can it be unprotected? Or at least modified to say that the Wikimedia FOundation owns it, not Jimmy Wales? Amorrow 22:24, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

After a couple days you will be able to edit it. Oysterguitarist 22:30, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've unprotected the article, thanks for bringing it up.--Werdan7T @ 22:37, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
What about re-unprotection? 7 mouths of blocking is very long in a free encyclopedia ;)--90.148.205.180 (talk) 17:27, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Simple English???

The word "multilingual" is not Simple English. Kennercat (talk) 18:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

In a lot of languages?--Noelle1995 (talk) 16:32, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Or just Be Bold? I don't know. No-one's changed the word, so maybe we have to wait for the opinions of other editors?--Noelle1995 (talk) 16:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Typo I cannot fix

Since the page is fully protected, I can't fix the typo there. The typo is at the end of the following sentence:

"People can change the articles in Wikipedia, or even create new articls"

Can an administrator fix that? -- RyanCross (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't fully protected, it was semi-protected. Since you aren't an auto-confirmed user yet, you weren't able to change the page. I have now fixed the typo that you asked to be fixed. Cheers, Razorflame 08:29, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks. --RyanCross (talk) 08:30, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

portmanteau

I don't think this word is simple English at all I suck at writing so I was just bringing it to someone's attention.

I definitely agree. Maybe we could change it to something like “…is a mix of…” instead. Choco4147 (talk) 15:57, 18 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Confused

Just a little confused 1.How does Wikipedia Choose itys adminstrators/editors(what difference?)2.Are donations only income source for Wikipedia?ROADOU (talk) 04:50, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good questions. 1: Wikipedia lets ANYONE edit, so we do not choose our editors. We do, however, block editors if they are making bad edits to Wikipedia. As for administrators, we have Wikipedia:Criteria for adminship. 2: Wikipedia is run by the Wikimedia Foundation. Their primary source if income is donations. outraged correspondent

Can anyone write ?

Hello, I am French, 1m68 and 68 kg, or 150 lb and 5.5 feet... I cannot contribute any longer for my Wikipedia, the French one, for some contributors think I am a vandal. They are three or four I think so and have canceled my recent contributions in talk pages as if it was vandalism. However my message are polite, logical and can give good ideas. They think they are too long and impolite. I think they dislike my ideas and infer I try to disturb them. They distrust me because I said my IQ was 238. I don't try to disturb anyone but would like to give good ideas kindly. Well, I am a kind man. Do you know what to do? --- For example, I give them my phone number but they accuse me from trying to give a tricky one to make them phone to innocent people (I ask them what for? but they didn't answer). In talk English pages, most of people try to build ideas honestly. In French talk pages, most of contributors are angry and violent most of time when suggesting they are wrong. They have cancelled a lot of contributions without explaining anything. The best of us stop contributing and get discouraged. French contributors are too young and want to have a Wikipedia that give them what they want to read. People with power for blocking the accounts don't want to read my very polite messages and cancel them with a sarcasm. Can English Wikipedia do something for us? Please have a look on this page : https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussion_utilisateur:H%C3%A9g%C3%A9sippe_Cormier&oldid=100124649#R.C3.A9tablissement_de_mon_message_constituant_une_demande and/or this one : https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussion_utilisateur:H%C3%A9g%C3%A9sippe_Cormier&oldid=100063880#Feu_rouge.2C_feu_vert

If you wish I can sum up them in French. The first one is like that : "112 Restoration of my message constituting an application. I beg you to stop cancel my messages and answer. Your behavior is not worthy of a Wikipedia contributor or an operator. Be responsible and provide the answer that you like to a polite and justified request. Please do not cancel this message. - Nicolas Messina (discuss) January 10, 2014 at 22:46 (CET)"

No body here has any power to ublock people on the French Wikipedia. Sorry but there is nothing we can do about ot.--Mr Wiki Pro (talk) 16:19, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

The 'Using Wikipedia' Section

This section has all sorts of typos and grammatical mistakes. It needs a lot of work; I will try to fix it up a bit when I have time. 2607:FB90:249F:5817:0:31:83D0:AB01 (talk) 23:53, 18 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

2018 screenshot

the 2018 screenshot shows vector 2022 theme, which was from 2022. How would it be correct by the screenshot from 2018 having a 2022 theme? also look at the history in commons, the 2018 is outdated. Thanks, WPchanger2011 (page, talk, changes he did, more changes) 00:59, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@WPchanger2011 You are right. This screenshot was from February 3, 2023, so I have changed the caption to say that. Lights and freedom (talk) 02:14, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
