Parameters

change

Mandatory

change
  • name = the official name (without the word island)
  • location = the sea in which the island is located
  • country = the country which administers or governs the island. Either specify the standard three-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code for the country, or a name by which the country is commonly known (e.g., "US", "South Korea", "Democratic People's Republic of Korea"). As this parameter makes use of the {{flag}} template, do not wikilink the country name like this: "[[Indonesia]]". (See {{flag}} for more information.) If the island is shared, then use "country 1" and "country 2" and list them alphabetically.

Optional

change

  • image name = locator/satellite/other map image (without the prefix "Image:")
  • image caption = caption for the image
  • image size = size of the image in pixels (e.g., "100px")
  • locator map = a locator map image (without the prefix "Image:") if there is one separate from the image used for the parameter "image name"
    • Add map_custom=yes to use maps with complex syntax, such as those created with {{location map}}; will not add "Image:" to locator map.
  • native name = only when the common name is different from the native name
  • native name link = state the name of a Wikipedia article about the language that the native name of the island is in, e.g., "Indonesian language" for an Indonesian island. Do not wikilink the country name like this: "[[Indonesian language]]".

  • archipelago = the name of the group of islands the island belongs to
  • total islands = total number of islands (for archipelagos only)
  • major islands = names of the major islands (for archipelagos only)
  • area = the total area of the island
    • area_km2 or area_sqmi = alternatively, state the area in either square kilometres or square miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • length = length of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • length_km or length_mi = alternatively, state the length in either kilometres or miles without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • width = width of the island (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)

  • elevation = elevation of the highest point (you may want to use the {{convert}} template)
    • elevation_m or elevation_ft = alternatively, state the height of the highest point in either metres or feet without using {{convert}}; the conversion will be done automatically
  • country admin divisions title = title for the administrative divisions
  • country admin divisions = the administrative divisions that govern the island
  • country admin divisions title 1 = (country admin divisions title 1)

Microformat

change

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

Sub-templates

change

If the place or venue has "established", "founded", "opened" or similar dates, use {{start date}} for the earliest of those dates unless the date is before 1583 CE.

If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.

Classes

change

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • agent
  • category
  • county-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • region
  • street-address
  • uid
  • url
  • vcard

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • geo
  • latitude
  • longitude

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.

Precision

change

When giving coordinates, please use an appropriate level of precision. Do not use {{coord}}'s |name= parameter.
