It is the sequel to The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. It received mixed to positive reviews and did well at the box office. This movie was released December 25, 1990 in the United States.

The final scenes of the movie were filmed at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, where the uncle of Francis Ford Coppola, the composer and conductor Anton Coppola, is shown conducting the opera, Cavalleria rusticana.
