Theodore McCarrick
Theodore Edgar McCarrick (born 7 July 1930)[1] is an American former cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the Archbishop of Washington, D.C., from 2001 to 2006.

Early life and education
changeMcCarrick was born in New York City, United States. He was ordained a priest on 31 May 1958 by Cardinal Francis Spellman.[1][2]
Ecclesiastical career
changeMcCarrick served in several roles within the Church, including as an auxiliary bishop of New York and Bishop of Metuchen. In 1986, he became the Archbishop of Newark, and in 2001, he was appointed the Archbishop of Washington. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II on 21 February 2001.[1][2]
Scandals and controversies
changeIn 2018, McCarrick was accused of sexual abuse, which led to his resignation from the College of Cardinals. The Vatican found him guilty of abuse in 2019, and he was laicized, which means he was removed from the clergy. He became the highest-ranking American cleric to be defrocked due to sexual abuse.[3][4]
