The University of Malaya is a public research university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is the oldest and highest ranking Malaysian institution of higher education, and was the only university in newly independent Malaya. It started in 1949, when King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College joined together. The university then was partly in Singapore and partly in Kuala Lumpur. In 1962 it was split into two independent universities. [1] In politics, UM has produced the most prime ministers. Out of ten Malaysian prime ministers, five attended UM. Mahathir Mohamad is the only prime minister elected twice.
