Marshall Jewell (October 20, 1825 – February 10, 1883) was a U.S. politician. He was the Governor of Connecticut between 1869 and 1870, and again from 1871 until 1873. Born in 1825 in Winchester, New Hampshire, he was made Minister to Russia by President Ulysses S. Grant from 1873 to 1874, but after only seven months in Russia, he left. Jewell then became the Postmaster General between 1874 and 1876. He was also a presidential candidate at the 1876 Republican National Convention and was the chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1880 until 1883. He died in 1883 in New Haven, Connecticut, and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut.[1]
