In her parliamentary work, Barley represents Trier for Germany's Social Democratic Party.

She serves on the Committee on the Election of Judges. It is responsible for appointing judges to the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. In addition, she is a member of the German-British Parliamentary Friendship Group, due to her British ancestry.

In 2015 Barley was suggested to succeed Yasmin Fahimi in the role of general secretary of the SPD, one of the party's leading positions.[2] Afterwards she was elected to this position in December 2015.[3]
