I don't think the phrase "hard outer layer" needs dashes; in my opinion, doing so is much like saying "red-car" or "big-house". Is there something about the phrase that makes it require dashes? - Sir Beluga (talk) 16:07, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

OK, fine, Not a compound word is what I think you're trying to say

I think the dashes work best for grouping words in adjectives, like "the not-so-easy test", but not in a phrase like "the big red house". - Sir Beluga (talk) 16:23, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
