Your interaction with User:Cathry
changeHi Tom, I'm Chris (DaneGeld to the rest of Wikipedia). I want to ask you a serious question, with a completely open mind. Let me stress that I lean neither one way nor the other, but I would like to know what your interest is in the User known as Cathry. You came here to report them to us, on October 18th, 16 days after signing up on the (main) English Wikipedia.
On your English talk page, ATrain had already told you that it's "super important that you're here to contribute to the encyclopedia, and not just hang around the noticeboards", and yet here you are 16 days in, passing information to another Wikipedia about a user you've not even interacted with.
Could you honestly tell me what attracted you to the case of Cathry at the English Wikipedia, and why as a newcomer to Wiki as a whole, you felt it important to be the one to notify us, and not let an administrator pass it on? Thanks, DaneGeld (talk) 22:10, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was about to ask this as well since this whole situation struck me as quite odd. As well, there was no need to notify the admins. Zhangj1079 (Saluton!) 22:18, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry about all this. Cathry had, as you know, been indefinitely blocked a couple of days before. Now, for an important piece of info: I was asked to get a bit more experience before editing ANI the day after I brought this up. The talk page edit was not sensible, I admit that, but I thought the warning would be sensible- I had contributed (not very much, though) in the ANI and noticed Cathry was also in Simple English. The ANI had been closed and nobody had said anything about Simple English, so I thought I would relay information in case nobody else thought of it. Evidently I was wrong about this, but as you say I'm new, and didn't have any idea that the admins already knew. Apologies, this was probably extremely misguided, but I was under the impression I was helping. TomBarker23 (talk) 14:20, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Tom. Thank you for getting back in touch with me and I apologise for the delay in replying to your answer. As you rightly summise, my cancer treatment is filling in a lot of my week right now, so I'm not doing as much as I used to. I appreciate your reply to my question. I have read your response and fully understand why you did what you did, and that you felt you were helping.
- We have what is known as a "OneStrike" block (WP:ONESTRIKE) which can be used on editors who are banned on other Wikimedia and Wikipedia projects, when they come here - especially if they're known for causing trouble. In most cases though, it's only used if the editor in question has broken rules or caused trouble here too. Since Cathry had not broken any rules here, nothing was done with their account. I would imagine if they do go rogue here, the same thing would happen. Under the circumstances, I now accept that there was nothing wrong with what you did. Thank you for your honesty and not taking offence at my question :) Regards, DaneGeld (talk) 21:49, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
