The band released their second album, Iowa, in 2001. After this album, the band did many different things. Members of Slipknot started other bands, such as Stone Sour, Murderdolls, and To My Surprise. They started recording the album in 2003. They recorded the album in The Mansion (a music studio). At first, the band did not make much music. The band's singer, Corey Taylor, was drinking alcohol.[4][5] Still, the band made enough music for a new album. Vol. 3 is different from Slipknot's first albums. It has different types of music, such as guitar solos and acoustic guitar music.[6][7]
Many music critics liked the album. The RIAA gave the album a platinum certification.[8] It went onto many national music charts. Vol. 3 was number 2 on the US Billboard 200.[9] It was also number 5 on the UK Albums Chart. The band won a Grammy Award for "Before I Forget".[10]
