Alta (Northern Sami: Áltá; Kven: Alattio; Finnish: Alattio) is a city in Alta Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. The city is the administrative centre of the municipality and the major commercial centre in the western part of the county. The city is on the southern end of Altafjorden at the mouth of the river Altaelva. There are several suburbs around the town. Kåfjord, Kvenvik and Jiepmaluokta are to the west; Øvre Alta and Tverrelvdalen are to the south; and Rafsbotn is to the east. The rock carvings at Alta are just to the west of the town.[3]
