Applied science

discipline that applies existing scientific knowledge to develop more practical applications

Applied science is about using the findings of science to improve its applications. In the natural sciences, this is typically done by engineering. In sciences such as psychology, this can mean that theoretical findings are used to improve a test method, for example. Applied Research is generally carried out to solve a problem. Certain refrigerants escape into the atmosphere and damage the ozone layer. Development of new refrigerants is an example of applied research. Scientists are not driven by a desire to know, but by a desire to solve a specific problem.
