The arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Saône-et-Loire département in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Its capital is the city of Chalon-sur-Saône.

History

When the Saône-et-Loire department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône was part of that original department.[2]

Geography

The arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône is bordered to the north by the Côte-d'Or department, to the east by the arrondissement of Louhans, to the south by the arrondissement of Mâcon, to the southwest by the arrondissement of Charolles and to the west by the arrondissement of Autun.

It is found in the northern part of the department, with an area of 1,726 km2 (666 sq mi),[3] the second largest in area of the department. It has 200,084 inhabitants, the arrondissement of the department with more people living there, and a population density of 115.9 inhabitants/km².[4]
