Cruz is expected to run for Resident Commissioner in the 2020 elections.[2][3] After Héctor Ferrer died in November 2018, Cruz became the leading candidate to run for Governor of Puerto Rico.[4]

Cruz became known for her dealings in San Juan during Hurricane Maria and how she and President Donald Trump engaged in a Twitter feud.[5] As a result, she was nominated as a candidate for Time's Person of the Year.[6]

On February 21, 2019, Cruz endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders' second presidential bid and joined as one of its four national co-chairs.[7]
