Du Wei (diplomat)

Ambassador of China to Israel, Ambassador of China to Ukraine

Du Wei (Chinese: 杜伟; pinyin: Dù Wěi; 2 October 1962 – 17 May 2020) was a Chinese diplomat. He was Ambassador to Ukraine from 2016 until 2019 and Ambassador to Israel from February 2020 until May 2020.[1] Du was born in China's Shandong province.[2]

Du was found dead in his Herziliya, Israel apartment on 17 May 2020, aged 57.[3] His death is not being treated as suspicious but is being investigated.[3]

His death came in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and only a few days after Du published an op-ed in the Jerusalem Post protesting American Vice President Mike Pence's visit to Israel attempting to persuade the Israeli government to limit its relationship with China.[4]
