Wood was married to Norma McCarty in 1956 until they divorced several months later. Then he married Kathy O'Hara in 1956. They were married until his death in 1978. Wood had an illigitimate daughter from a 1946 relationship who lived in NY.

A 1994 movie was released based on Wood's life directed by Tim Burton. Johnny Depp played Wood in the movie.
