Elijah Cummings
American politician (1951-2019)
Elijah Eugene Cummings (January 18, 1951 – October 17, 2019) was an American politician and civil rights activist. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Maryland's 7th congressional district from 1996 until his death in 2019.[2] Before, he was in the Maryland House of Delegates. He was a member of the Democratic Party and chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform.

Cummings had surgery to fix his aortic valve in May 2017 and two months later he developed a surgery-related infection.[3] Cummings was later hospitalized for a knee infection.[4]
On October 17, 2019, Cummings died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 68.[5][6]
