The Guairá department (Spanish: Departamento de Guairá) is a department of Paraguay. The capital is the city of Villarrica. Its ISO 3166-2 code is PY-04.

Geography

The Guairá department is in the central part of the Oriental region. It has an area of 3,846 km2 (1,485 sq mi), one of the smallest of the Oriental region and of the country, with an estimated population (2013) of 198,532 for a population density of 51.6.[1]

The highest points of Paraguay are in the Guairá department;[1] these are:

  • Tres Kandu, 842 m (2,762 ft) high.
  • Capii, 816 m (2,677 ft) high.
  • Peró, 815 m (2,674 ft) high.
  • Amor, 765 m (2,510 ft) high.

Rivers

The main river in the department is the Tebicuary, a tributary of the Paraguay river. The Tebicuari-mi is an important tributary of the Tebicuari.

Climate

As of 2014, the total amount of precipitation in the city of Villarrica was 2,281.8 mm (89.8 in). The month with the most precipitation was April with 453.6 mm (17.9 in) of precipitation. The month with the least precipitation was August with 18.4 mm (0.7 in).[2]

The average temperature for the year 2014 in Villarrica was 23 °C (73 °F). The warmest month, on average, was February with an average temperature of 27.8 °C (82.0 °F). The coolest month on average is July, with an average temperature of 17.5 °C (63.5 °F).[2]
