In 1968, he married Sonja Haraldsen. They had two children: Princess Märtha Louise and Prince Haakon.

In 2024 he became sick when he was on a trip to Malaysia; Norwegian authorities paid for his trip home in a jet airplane for medical evacuation; Media questioned why the government is not also paying for a sick 102-year old war hero,[4] and merchant marine during World War Two ; He has not been evacuated from his camping wagon in London (as of March 5, 2024).
