Incident

change

Around 12 am on March 13, 2023, Trammell had a mental health crisis after he was called to be in a job interview, which concerned a neighbor who called the police complaining of the noise. Trammell was arrested in his apartment for an outstanding warrant, from a wellness check a year before, which him and his family didn’t know about.[4] Around half an hour later, he was taken to a jail in Montgomery County, Ohio and placed in a prison cell. Surveillance video later revealed that prison guards "taunted, belittled and threatened" Trammell.[1]

Trammell begged and screamed to be let out of the cell.[1] He asked for a phone call to his mother, a blanket, some water and medication.[2] Around 4:15am, he repeatedly banged his head against the wall, injuring himself badly. Guards placed him twice in a restraint chair with his chest, wrists and ankles strapped.[1] He had also been stripped naked. By the time he was taken to the hospital, he was unconscious and he died three days later.[1]

Aftermath

change

Before his death, Trammell lived independently, worked, and loved sports, specifically wrestling and enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking.[3]

On April 8, 2024, which would have been Trammell's 21st birthday, his ashes were spread over a bridge in a park during the solar eclipse.

Trammell was one of 220 victims to die suspicious deaths in police custody in Ohio between 2019-2023. The police ruled his death as a suicide, despite criticism.
