John C. Stennis

American politician (1901-1995)

John Cornelius Stennis (August 3, 1901 – April 23, 1995) was an American politician. He was the United States senator of Mississippi.[1] He served as senator from 1947 to 1989. He was a member of the Democratic Party. The USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) is named after him. He served in the senate for 47 years. Stennis was born in Kemper County, Mississippi. Stennis was President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1987 until 1989.

Cranston died at his hospital in Jackson, Mississippi from problems caused by pneumonia on April 23, 1995, aged 93.[2]
