Karl-Otto Apel
German philosopher (1922–2017)
Karl-Otto Apel (German: [ˈaːpl̩]; 15 March 1922 – 15 May 2017) was a German philosopher and Professor Emeritus at the University of Frankfurt am Main. He developed a distinctive philosophical approach which he called "transcendental pragmatics" (Transzendentalpragmatik).[1] He was known for his works Understanding and Explanation: A Transcendental-Pragmatic Perspective and Theory of Communicative Action.

Apel was made a Member of the Academia Europaea in 1989 and a Full Member of the Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea in 1993. In 2001, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Apel died on 15 May 2017 in Niedernhausen at the age of 95.[2][3]
