Icelandic politician

Kristrún Mjöll Frostadóttir (born 12 May 1988) is an Icelandic politician and economist who has been the 33rd and current Prime Minister of Iceland since 2024. She has been the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance since 2022. She was elected to the Althing in 2021. Before entering politics, Kristrún was an economist who worked for Arion Bank and Morgan Stanley.[1]

Kristrún led the Social Democratic Alliance into the 2024 parliamentary elections, in which the party won the most seats. After several days of coalition talks, Kristrún formed a government and became prime minister in December 2024. At age 36, she is Iceland's youngest prime minister.[2]

Early life

Kristrún was born in Reykjavík.[1] She graduated from Reykjavik Junior College. She got a bachelor's degree from the University of Iceland and a master's degree in international studies from Yale University. She earned a master's degree in economics from Boston University.[3]

Financial career

Kristrún began working as a journalist for the business newspaper Viðskiptablaðið. She also worked for the analysis department of Arion Bank.[1] She was a specialist for Morgan Stanley in New York City and London.[1]

Kristrún worked for the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce in 2017. In 2018, she became the main economist for the Kvika Bank. She worked these until 2021, when she decided to run for office.[4]

Political career

In the 2021 parliamentary election, she was elected into the Icelandic parliament for the Social Democratic Alliance.

In 2022, Kristrún ran for leader of the Social Democratic Alliance and won the election, as she was the only candidate.[5]

Prime Minister (since 2024)

In November 2024, Frostadóttir led the party during the parliamentary elections.[6] The Social Democratic Alliance won the most seats at 15 seats.[6]

On 3 December 2024, President Halla Tómasdóttir gave Kristrún the first mandate in trying to form a government with her own party, Viðreisn, and the People's Party.[7] On 4 December, she began the formal process of forming a government made up of Social Democratic Alliance, Viðreisn and the People's Party. The coalition leaders were called "valkyries", because the three parties are led by women.[8][9]

After seventeen days of coalition talks, Kristrún was able to form a government and became prime minister on 21 December 2024.[10][11] She became the country's youngest prime minister, at the age of 36.[2]

Personal life

Kristrún is married to Einar B. Ingvarsson. They have two children.[12]
