Juice Wrld made the song about his pain and feelings after going through a breakup.[3] The song interpolates the 1993 Sting song Shape of my Heart.[4] Sting gave Juice Wrld his blessing to use the song and said "'Lucid Dreams' was my favorite of all the many interpolations of 'Shape of my Heart,' it will resonate for many years to come,"[5]

On May 11, 2018, a music video for the song was released. It was directed by Cole Bennett. In the video, Juice is seen rapping with his head poking up through the floor. Through the video there are scenes of him smoking a joint in a dimly-lit stairwell and exchanging glances with a woman applying heavy makeup in a mirror.
