The municipality was established on January 1, 2018. It was made by combining the former municipalities of Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Menterwolde, and Slochteren.
About 61,000 people live in Midden-Groningen. It covers an area of about 314 square kilometres (121 square miles).
The main settlement is Hoogezand.
