The song's lyrics were written by guitarist Ben Moody from fiction, and the music was written by pianist Amy Lee, who also added the bridge.[7] It is a piano and power ballad.[8][9] The lyrics are about a spirit that haunts the memory of a grieving loved one.[10]

On the Billboard charts, "My Immortal" was able to peak at #7 on Hot 100,[11] #2 on the Mainstream Top 40,[12] #1 on the Adult Top 40,[13] and #19 on the Adult Contemporary charts.[14] In 2005, the song was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.[15]
