The business was started by Robert McAlpine in Lanarkshire in 1869. He died in 1934.
Many Irish immigrants who had come to England looking for work worked for the company. Dominic Behan wrote a song about them called "McAlpine's Fusiliers" in the 1960s. It was made famous by The Dubliners.[2]
