Stanisław Ryłko (born 4 July 1945)[1] is a Polish Roman Catholic Cardinal. He has been the Archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore since 2016.

Early life and education

Stanisław Ryłko was born on 4 July 1945 in Andrychów, Poland. He became a priest on 30 March 1969. He studied in Poland and later in Rome.[1][2]

Career

Ryłko worked in the Roman Curia for many years. In 1995, he became the Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He was made a bishop in 1996. In 2003, he became the President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.[1][2]

He was created a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on 24 November 2007. In 2016, he was appointed the Archpriest (honorary title for rectors of major basilicas) of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.[1][2]
