The Japanese language in some ways resembles the Chinese language in that both have what the Japanese call Kanji. The difference is that the Japanese language has two syllabaries, each of 46 characters. One is called hiragana, the other is called katakana. おおさか (or Osaka) is an example of hiragana on that page.
