Which is the primary use?

change

Now as an apparent scour of the internet has turned up a few other uses of the term that is the subject of this article, as well as the one that this article was originally created to describe, I guess we need to decide which is the primary topic that this term is used for, and re-focus the article to give that due weight.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we should do that? Centaur (talk) 22:47, 6 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Different disciplines have different views of importance. We should look for the common factor across all disciplines, and go from there. Martinvl (talk) 21:21, 7 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Rather than write a dictionary-type article with all known uses of the term given equal billing, I would like to see this article developed to concentrate on what appears to be the most common, or primary, use of the term - its use in metrology. Other uses could be mentioned. If any of the other uses are significant then they may deserve a separate article too.
As this article was created to discuss "System of measurement (metrology)", I propose we concentrate on that here. Centaur (talk) 08:43, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
At least two different "systems of measurement" are proposed as part of the "New SI" for determining the kilogram standard. One is the en:Watt balance. The other is the Avagadro sphere. Both are very much part of "Systems of measurement (metrology)". How do you propose incorporating references to these systems (yes they are systems) into the article? I think that the most basic (common) use is the ability to conduct a repeatable, well-defined experiment which allows to assign a numeric value, and possibly a unit to an observation. Ideally the same numeric value and unit is assigned if the experiment is conducted twice with the same data. This is common in counting the number of animals in a certain (predefined) area, measuring the electric charge of a particle or putting it in relation to its size, comparing the economies of two countries, looking at the information value of a statement or at the complexity of an algorithm. --Eptalon (talk) 10:00, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

This and system of units are very similar concepts. Both are small articles and both are very new and immature, so now would be a good time for a merge. As this is the older article, I guess this one should be the host of the merge. Although, perhaps, the joint article could be renamed "system of units of measurement" to cover both bases. This article is immature. It is obvious that the original editor underestimated the scope of the subject. If anything, this article should be merged into the article Measurement and left there until it is sufficiently mature to be spun off as a separate article. The article "system of units", which is based on a sound reference work, should remain where it is. Martinvl (talk) 00:04, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
