Almost all the community's port facilities are on Amaknak Island. This is better known as Dutch Harbor or just "Dutch". It is the largest fisheries port in the U.S. by volume caught.

The Aleut have lived on Unalaska Island for thousands of years. They named the island "Ounalashka" which means 'Near the Peninsula'.

Makushin Volcano is on the island. It is not quite visible from the town of Unalaska. On a clear day the steam can be seen rising from its cone.
