María Elena Durazo (or “Maria Elena”; March 20, 1953 - present) is a Mexican-American democrat who is currently representing the 24th district in the California State Senate. She was born to a large migrant family and spent her childhood traveling between California and Oregon harvesting crops. Despite the harsh circumstances, she attended Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, graduating in 1975, then attended the Peoples College of Law and graduated in 1985. Afterwards she became an organizer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (1985).
