Elizabeth "Betita" Martínez (December 12, 1925 – June 29, 2021[1]) was a Chicana woman who was a civil rights activist. She fought alongside other women fighting for their voting rights. She was also a writer. In 1960 she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) where she helped design a book on civil rights.[2] She also reported on the Delano Grape Strike. In the movement, she felt lonely as she was a non-black woman in this movement.[3] She decided to go home and help people of Mexican descent or heritage. It was in New Mexico that she came and founded a bilingual newspaper named El Grito del Norte which translates to The Cry of the North. [4]Another reason for her to move to mexico, was she was fighting for the Treaty of Guadalupe. [5]She was a part of leading protests and marches fighting for the rights of women. She used her platform for the better and helped raise awareness of the sexism and homophobia surrounding the culture of Latinos. She started to reclaim the term “Chicana” which was a derogatory term at the time.[6] She decided to promote people that were black and people that were brown to form alliances as they were the most populations of minorities in the United States. [7]In her writings, she wrote about the suppression of Chicana women by Chicano men. Her writings often had a theme of freedom and power for all people of color, specifically women.[8]
