Mother Ada Wright (Scottsboro Boys) was a Black woman who worked on the Scottsboro defense campaign. The Scottsboro case was when nine Black teenage boys were falsely accused of raping two white girls. The case took place in 1931, during the Great Depression. Wright’s sons, Andy and Roy Wright, were two of the boys involved in the case. The Scottsboro defense campaign was led by the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA), and the International Labor Defense (ILD). The campaign recruited Ada Wright to go on a European speaking tour. She was able to offer a new perspective, one of a Black domestic worker and mother from the south. Her speeches helped the Scottsboro defense gain much more international support, and also resonated with many Black women within the United States. During and after the tour, millions of political organizations and European trade-unionists joined the fight for the Scottsboro boys’ freedom. [1][2][3]
