Recent changes

• Improved LaTeX capabilities for math rendering are now available in the wikis thanks to supporting Phantom tags. This completes part of the #59 wish of the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 August. It will be on all wikis from 4 August (calendar).
• The Realtime Preview will be available as a Beta Feature on wikis in Group 0. This feature was built in order to fulfill one of the Community Wishlist Survey proposals.

Future changes

• The Beta Feature for DiscussionTools will be updated throughout August. Discussions will look different. You can see some of the proposed changes.

Future meetings

• This week, three meetings about Vector (2022) with live interpretation will take place. On Tuesday, interpretation in Russian will be provided. On Thursday, meetings for Arabic and Spanish speakers will take place. See how to join.

Quick Question

Hi, Chenzw. If okay, Would you be able to give me some feedback on the article Kimono? As in looking at it does the layout and order of pictures look okay? I edit the article/look at it quite often so I might not be able to see things - or see things the way that people looking at the article at first time or non frequently may see. Recent changes

• GUS2Wiki copies the information from Special:GadgetUsage to an on-wiki page so you can review its history. If your project isn't already listed on the Wikidata entry for Project:GUS2Wiki you can either run GUS2Wiki yourself or make a request to receive updates. [1]

• There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
• Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 9 August at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 11 August at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).

Future meetings

• The Wikimania Hackathon will take place online from August 12–14. Don't miss the pre-hacking showcase to learn about projects and find collaborators. Anyone can propose a project or host a session. Newcomers are welcome!

User rights

@Chenzw sir, thank you for issuing me the rights for rollbackers. But in past few days some of the editors told me not to revert their edits (ignoring IP(s) case). I fear if my work are against the community's goals, then I will be blocked. So please give some advice how would I tackle on these actions. • The Persian (Farsi) Wikipedia community decided to block IP editing from October 2021 to April 2022. The Wikimedia Foundation's Product Analytics team tracked the impact of this change. An impact report is now available.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 August. It will be on all wikis from 18 August (calendar).
• Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 16 August at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 18 August at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).

• Two problems with Kartographer maps have been fixed. Maps are no longer shown as empty when a geoline was created via VisualEditor. Geolines consisting of points with QIDs (e.g., subway lines) are no longer shown with pushpins. [5][6]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 August. It will be on all wikis from 25 August (calendar).
• Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 25 August at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
• The colours of links and visited links will change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. [7]

Future changes

• The new [subscribe] button helps newcomers get answers. The Editing team is enabling this tool everywhere. You can turn it off in your preferences. [8]

Question

Hi, Chenzw. For Wikipedia (this one) I have been having some trouble, I recently got a new Asus gaming laptop, and I don't want to use the built in WIFI card because it doesn't work/I don't want to wear it out because I run a very internet intensive application. Meaning I have two choices the ethernet cord - which is too much trouble because the wire is so long and puts pressure on the usb ports - or a dlink wifi dongle, problem is with this dongle I have only been getting speeds of about 150mpbs and when loading wikipedia sometimes the page will look funny and I have to load the page again, so I am wondering is there a problem with my web browser itself, or does Wikipedia need a faster speed? Because 150mbps seems quite fast already. (With ethernet I can get up to 400mpbs). Do you have this problem too? That is quite vague, you have to explain what you mean by the page looking funny. Also, I think it is a bad idea to not use the built-in WiFi adapter for the reasons that you mentioned. Chenzw  Talk  03:33, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

I have the image screenshotted, how would you like me to share it with you, as I can't really describe it. The built in WiFi adapter keeps saying "Connected, no Internet" upon connection to the networks. --Tsugaru let's talk! :) 20:37, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

This doesn't seem to be an issue of bandwidth. The problem in the screenshot appears to be related to the CSS not being loaded properly. Try clearing your browser cache. Chenzw  Talk  13:01, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Okay I will try that, Thanks for the help. However what I find strange is on this new computer using Chrome alongside that problem I told you, I also edit conflict myself at times. I wonder if it has to do with a userscript that I may have enabled that is causing all these errors? On EN Wikipedia I seldom edit there because my account there is so messed up. I am not sure. You can try by disabling all of the userscripts, then re-enabling them one by one until the problem recurs. Chenzw  Talk  03:48, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

It looks like your connection is not loading the relevant CSS files properly. There are many possible root causes for this, and you should check with your ISP's support representative. Chenzw  Talk  04:59, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

• The Realtime Preview is available as a Beta Feature on wikis in Group 2. This feature was built in order to fulfill one of the Community Wishlist Survey proposals. Please note that when this Beta feature is enabled, it may cause conflicts with some wiki-specific Gadgets.

Problems

• In recent months, there have been inaccurate numbers shown for various Special:Statistics at Commons, Wikidata, and English Wikipedia. This has now been fixed. [9]
