Yuri Averbakh

Russian chess player and author (1922–2022)

Yuri Lvovich Averbakh (Russian: Ю́рий Льво́вич Аверба́х; 8 February 1922 – 7 May 2022) was a Russian chess player and author. He was the oldest living chess grandmaster at the time of his death. He was chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978.

Averbakh was born in Kaluga. His father was a German Jew and his mother was Russian.[1] Averbakh turned 100 in February 2022. He died four months later on 7 May 2022 in Moscow, Russia.[2]
