Cognac is a commune in southwestern France in the Charente department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, of which it is a subprefecture.

Geography
changeThe city of Cognac is along the Charente river, mainly on its left side, between the cities of Angoulême, prefecture of the Charente department, and Saintes, a subprefecture in the Charente-Maritime department.
It has an area of 15.5 km2 (6.0 sq mi).[2] Its average altitude is 29 m (95 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 21 m (69 ft).[3]
Cognac is at about 60 km (37 mi) to the east of the Atlantic coast.
