Howard, Kansas
Howard is a city in Elk County, Kansas, United States.[5] It is also the county seat of Elk County. In 2020, 570 people lived there.[4]

History
changeHoward was created in 1870. It was incorporated as a city in 1877.[6] Howard was named after Oliver O. Howard. He was a Union Army general during the Civil War, and he created Howard University.[7][8] The first post office in Howard was created in February 1870.[9] In 1901, Howard was a sundown town where African Americans were not allowed to live.[10]

changeThe 2020 census says that there were 570 people, 268 households, and 148 families living in Howard. Of the households, 71.6% owned their home and 28.4% rented their home.
The median age was 51.5 years. Of the people, 90.9% were White, 1.2% were Native American, 0.4% were Black, 0.2% were Asian, 1.1% were from some other race, and 6.3% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.6% of the people.[4][11]
