Stanton was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1976, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate. He supported the man who beat him in the primary, Howard Metzenbaum.
In the 2012 election, he endorsed Republican nominee Mitt Romney over his party's nominee President Barack Obama.[1]
Stanton died on May 2, 2022 in Potomac, Maryland at the age of 90.[2]
