Lauren Underwood
Lauren Ashley Underwood (born October 4, 1986) is an American politician, political advisor and former registered nurse. She is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's 14th district since January 3, 2019.

Early life
changeUnderwood was born on October 4, 1986, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.[1] At age three, she moved with her family to Naperville, Illinois. At eight years old, Underwood was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, a pre-existing condition.[2] Underwood studied at University of Michigan and at Johns Hopkins University.
Political career
changeIn August 2017, Underwood announced her candidacy in the 2018 elections for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois's 14th congressional district.[3] Underwood defeated incumbent Randy Hultgren in the November 2018 general election.[4]
When she was sworn-in at age 32, she became the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.[5] In 2022, she was elected a co-chairs of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, making her the first black woman to have an elected Democratic leadership position since Shirley Chisholm in the 1970s.[6]
