Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse was an accident that happened on November 1, 2024, around 11:50 AM at the Novi Sad Railway Station. Fourteen people died, including a six-year-old boy, and three others were injured. Three of the injured were in critical condition. Eight victims were from Serbia, and one was from North Macedonia.

Background

In 2021, plans were made to fix the railway station to improve the train service. The fixes included upgrading tracks, building a new platform, and making the main building accessible for people with disabilities. Work started in September 2021.[1]

The accident

On November 1, 2024, the canopy over the main entrance of the station collapsed. Fourteen people died, and three others were injured.[2] An engineer said the collapse happened because of extra steel panels added during the renovation.[3]

Reactions

The Serbian government declared November 2 a day of mourning. A three-day mourning period was announced in Novi Sad.[4] The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed condolences to the families of the victims.[5]
