Italian cultural manager

Paolo Petrocelli (born 15 October 1984) is an Italian cultural manager, academic and author. He specializes in international relations, cultural diplomacy, and opera development in the Middle East and North Africa.[1][2] He is the founder and president of EMMA for Peace[3][4][5] and the head of Dubai Opera.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Early life and education

Petrocelli was born in 1984 in Rome, Italy.[14][15] He studied music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and at the Middlesex University in London. He also earned degrees in Literature and Musicology from Sapienza University in Rome, an Executive MBA from Bocconi School of Management, and a PhD in Cultural Economics from IULM University in Milan.[4][16][17]

In February 2023, he was appointed by Emaar Properties as Head of Dubai Opera,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][17] where he works on updating and improving the theater's "artistic vision and identity".[6] That year, the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader for his work in the arts and culture.[4][18][19][20]

In 2020, Petrocelli became the Director General of the Stauffer Center for String Instruments in Cremona, Italy.[6] There, he established new programs like the Concertmaster Artist diploma, Stauffer Labs, and the Stauffer Summer Festival.[21][22]

Petrocelli founded and leads the Euro-Mediterranean Music Academy for Peace (EMMA for Peace)[3][4][5] and started the blog Music Diplomacy – Stories from the World.[23] He also directed the cultural program of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates and co-founded the Youth Committee of the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO.[4][5][1] He has held roles such as Assistant Superintendent for International Development at the Rome Opera House and Advisor for International Development at the Royal Opera House Muscat.[3][4] Additionally, he is a cultural advisor for Coldplay.[4][23]

Petrocelli has specialized in musicology and opera studies, with a particular focus on the music of the first XX century. He wrote the book The Resonance of a Small Voice: William Walton and the Violin Concerto in England between 1900 and 1940.[16] In 2023, he published a book about the development of opera genre in the Middle East and North Africa called The Evolution of Opera in the Middle East and North Africa.[6][24][25] In his works, he characterized opera as "a grand art form that combines music and drama to honor country's cultural heritage".[26][27] He has also lectured at universities such as Yale, MIT, and NYU.[7][26][28]

Awards and honors

In 2022, Petrocelli was named one of the 40 most influential young people in Europe by "Friends of Europe" and was the first cultural manager to be included in Fortune's "40 Under 40" list in Italy.[3][4][29][30] In 2024, Arabian Business magazine listed him as one of the top 30 leaders under 40 in the Middle East.[31] The French Cartier named him a "Luminary Thinker".[32]
