Good article?

change

Hi Wikipedians,

I wanted to add another discussion at the article talk page. There needs to be more copy editing for it to be Good Article. Oregonian2012 really worked hard on this and lots of us want to see it be a GA, but there is more that needs to occur. Here is a simple, vague list of what we need to do.

  • 1. Copy edit. Nothing makes an article better than copy editing. Quite frankly, copy editing is how I've helped get certain articles to GA to FA.
  • 2. Expand and add a few more references. Anywhere could use more detail.

Thanks for the help. WorldTraveller101  ?  19:26, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Someone is working on this. Let's wait to see what will happen. The article does not need to be expanded. Just about every word on Nutt is included here and there is nothing I'm aware of that needs to be added. It doesn't need more references. There are not that many references out there and the best ones have been used and entered. Thanks for the input! Oregonian2012 (talk) 20:11, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem, but you might want to do this if you ever want to make it a very good article   WorldTraveller101  ?  21:53, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

GA review

  • The page title differs from what is mentioned in the first sentence. The page title should be included there, at the very least in brackets or something.

  Done "aka Commodore Nutt". Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • and returned to America very rich - define rich. 100 years ago rich most likely had a different meaning than today. very in general is not very encyclopaedic.

Done Deleted "very" and linked "rich" to wikt. Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • What is a gentleman farmer? Seems worth either explaining or linking.

Done "A man of independent means who farms chiefly for pleasure rather than income." I tried to define this at wikt but it was dumped because the powers that be do not want two-word entries like "gentleman farmer" or "family Bible". Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • family Bible should be linked.

Done Revised to read, "According to Nutt family records". Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:59, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Is "large, hearty folk" mentioned in the next ref like this? Quotation marks means something was quoted and that needs a ref.

  Done Cited. Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:59, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • nickel as a historical currency/coin should be linked.

  Done Linked to wikt. Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:59, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • As mentioned above the word "very" should not appear in an encyclopaedia... "She was very uncomfortable with his attentions.", "He reminded her that the little man was very rich", "returned to America in 1872 very rich" (again, what is rich?)

  Done Revised or deleted. Oregonian2012 (talk) 14:59, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Otherwise it is a really good article! -Barras talk 09:53, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

PVGA comments from Bluegoblin7

Here's some thoughts on the article. For PVGA I'd hope to see them all fixed, although if there's any reason why not let me know.

  • Bold full name (George Washington Morrison Nutt).

  Done

  • "...him only as a "nice little boy"" needs a reference.

  Done

  • "It is not known why, when or how George Nutt started his career in the entertainment industry. He may have been performing as early as 1854. William C. Walker, the manager of a small circus based in Manchester, once wrote that he discovered Nutt and was the first to exhibit him." - Complex paragraph.

  Done Simplified.

  • "Barnum was pleased. He got plenty of free publicity out of all the excitement." seems to be a bit informal in tone. 'Plenty' is a weasel word.

  Done

  • Although linked to Wiktionary, 'livery' would be better eradicated altogether - perhaps uniform? Wikt: links should be a last resort, not used commonplace.

  Done Uniform is fine.

  • The New York City Police Department section seems a bit random, and ends abruptly. Is there more to this tale or not? Is it comprehensively covered? If not, then can we expand it, if it is then I'm not sure that it needs anything more than a passing reference.

Done I think this was one of Barnum's publicity stunts, but I can't write that in the article. I've not seen this incident mentioned in any materials about Nutt. I've cut it back severely.

  • Lavinia Warren section needs more references. None at all in the first paragraph where most of the information is contained. 'Nutt fell in love with her at once' is particularly important, and shouldn't have a line to itself.

  Done

Other than that, I think this is in pretty good shape. Goblin 17:56, 7 September 2013 (UTC) I ♥ Kennedy!Reply
