800 breeds? change

The article says there are 800 breeds but there are only about 400 breeds! --82.207.190.204 21:32, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Simple English change

This page is not in Simple English. Someone should fix that. Kennercat (talk) 18:28, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

More Description change

Should describe what dogs actually look like more than just relying on pictures.

What on Earth would that achieve? Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:59, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hearing Range?? change

I don't believe dogs can hear 5000 miles away...the "regular" Wikipedia page states that dogs can hear things up to four times the distance that humans can. (That would mean that humans could hear things from 1250 miles away!!) Audball911 (talk) 21:52, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Color blind change

Color-blindness can have many definitions. It ranges from partial inability to distinguish between colors to being totally color-blind, e.g., only being able to see black, white, and shades of gray. Dogs have dichromatic color blindness - which means they cannot see red or green. What humans see as red, dogs see as brown; and green grass appears blue to dogs. I would clarify this in the article, but it is protected and I am new to simple English Wikipedia.THD3 (talk) 16:43, 21 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

How long do dogs live? change

The article reads: Dogs usually live about 10 years or more. This is not precise, look here. I would write: Dogs usually live about 10 to 15 years. 85.193.232.158 (talk) 08:04, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have rewritten the section, and given some examples. --Eptalon (talk) 09:38, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Add a Link change

There ought to be a link to the page on domestication (this word appears in the first paragraph of the article).

Thank you for noticing; I fixed the error. Ever thought about creating an account, and getting autoconfirmed status? --Eptalon (talk) 20:56, 10 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Pack leaders, alpha dogs and dominance theory are outdated change

Under Appearance and behaviour it notes: "Domesticated dogs often view their owner as the alpha male."

This fact is based on outdated theories. Some information on this can be found on the website of the "American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior" here: https://avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Dominance_Position_Statement_download-10-3-14.pdf

Using a book on domesticated cats to prove a fact about dogs also doesn't speak to the credibility of the currently listed source. [That is a fair comment. Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:20, 24 October 2023 (UTC)]Reply

Maybe this can be reworded to something like: "A outdated belief says that domesticated dogs often view their owner as the alpha male. However the research on alpha and beta rankings in wolves and dogs were proven to be flawed and current research suggest this is not the case. This theory has led to harmful training methods that are now advised against.[link to source]"

Kingannoy (talk) 15:24, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not generally agreed. I've seen many examples where dogs do regard their male owners as the alpha male. Macdonald-ross (talk) 05:20, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
