Structural strategy in football articles change

After List of Indian football teams was created, I developed

There is a good reason for two linked articles instead of just one.

  • One article is about the team or the corporate "brand name" which exists across a span of seasons
  • The list article identifies some of the players whose individual efforts and contributions help create the team's record.

In part, the paired articles may help to highlight a structural distinction between the long-term goals of an encyclopedia article and the somewhat different goals of time-sensitive journalism. In other words, journalism is the "first draft" of history; but the articles in our Wikipedia project try to step back a bit. Do you see the difference?

Experience with articles about Japanese association football teams persuade me that the two-article strategy avoids problems in advance.

For example, there are only two players mentioned in the article about Pune F.C.. In the "Notable achievement" section, we read specific reasons why each player is notable. In contrast, those identified at List of Pune F.C. players are notable only because each is part of the Pune team. Please compare Kawasaki Frontale#Notable Achievement and List of Kawasaki Frontale players.

Is this strategy understandable? Is it best in our SEWP context? --Horeki (talk) 12:57, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

After reading through your posts I have come to my own conclusion that, while I still dont like this, I would not mind separate articles as long as they link to each other. So lets continue on. First have to fix the Pune FC ones. --Arsenalkid700 (talk) 15:04, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Auntof6 suggests here that others may be willing to help us look at this issue from a wider perspective?

A summary at Wikipedia:Simple talk#Standard format for football club articles may bring other points of view to this discussion. This may help us develop a consensus about what to do going forward. --Horeki (talk) 19:18, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Wherever the player lists end up, it would be good to always put a date on them. For example, put something like "As of July 1, 2012, the following players were on the team:". That way, if the date is fairly far in the past, the readers can know that things might have changed. You might also like to make use of the template {{Update after}} to flag lists that should be updated. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Excellent idea. That should have already been the common sense thing to do. --Arsenalkid700 (talk) 22:00, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
