"but without injuring them" change

I suggest that this phrase be deleted from the first paragraph. Dictionary entries for spanking, such as found in Cambridge, Oxford, Merriam-Webster, and reference.com mention "punishment", but not "injury". The AAP defines spanking as "striking a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intention of modifying behavior without causing physical injury", but this may be prescriptive rather than descriptive, in line with their general goal of preventing injury. They define the limits of "spanking" by the intended result, not the action itself. In the same document they note that "Spanking children <18 months of age increases the chance of physical injury". In practice, spanking can easily produce injury (see this story and this story). Then there is the recent research showing deficits in the brains of spanked children, suggesting that some injuries produced by spanking may simply be invisible to the eye.

"...little danger of injury..." change

"People who approve of spanking say that the buttocks is the safest place to hit the child, since there is little danger of injury to this part of the body."

This may be true, but who? There is no citation given and I haven't come across a reliable source for this info.

POV change

Comparing this page with its relative on En wiki, I see this pages as biased against spanking, and definitely POV. There are many sources, but they have been carefully selected to represent a point of view. Other editors should take a look at the En wiki page and compare it. Also, see their talk page for its discussion of edit-warring. Personally, I have no views on the subject, but I do have views on impartial editing. Things needed change

At the moment this is only about spanking as a form of punishing children. Imo what this article needs:

  • Sectioning
  • References
  • Ritual spanking?
  • Adults spanking each other, mostly as a form of sexual play?
