Further information
changeOnce an IP has been warned/blocked a few times, it is usually a good idea to add a header to the IP's talkpage, which identifies the WHOIS information. This info can be obtained by clicking on the "WHOIS" link in the talkpage footer, and reviewing the related information. Sometimes a domain may be identified at the top of the listing, or there may be other information in the fields labeled OrgName and (if available) CustName. Try to choose whatever seems to be the most specific information.
For example, if the OrgName is "AT&T Services", the CustName is "HumboldtCounty.gov", and the domain at the top is "mail.appletreeschools.com", then "Appletreeschools.com" is the most specific information.
Whichever name you find, will then probably fall into one of the following categories:
Category | Tag / Examples | Notes |
---|---|---|
Educational institutions | {{Shared IP edu}} {{Shared IP edu|Covington School District}} |
|
Governmental source | {{sharedIP}} {{sharedIP|Local council of Downpatrick}} |
(province/city/shire/etc.) |
Non-ISP businesses | {{SharedIPCORP}} {{SharedIPCORP|The Giant Company}}
| |
Non-shared static IPs | {{whois}} {{whois|Road Runner Residential}} |
|
Generic Internet Service Provider | {{ISP}} {{ISP|AOL}} {{ISP|Cox Communications|ga.at.cox.net}} {{ISP|HughesNet}} |
the names will usually be obvious as to whether or not they are ISPs, or you may wish to search to see if there is a relevant Wikipedia article, and then read the information there to see how it is defined |
Other type of non-ISP organization which may plausibly have shared IPs | {{SharedIP|<name>|<host>}} {{SharedIP|organization}} |
|
Misc. | {{whois|registration info}} |
Notes
change- For specific examples on any of the above, click on the template name, and then from the template page click on "What links here" in the lefthand toolbox to get a list of pages which use that template
- Where possible, check to see if the organisation has a Wikipedia article about it, and if so, link to it.
