History

Thayer was planned out in the fall of 1870. This is when the railroad was extended to that point.[4][5] It was named after Nathaniel Thayer, a railroad employee.[6][7] The town was built up quickly and was incorporated as a city in 1871.[8]

Geography

Thayer is at 37°29′14″N 95°28′34″W / 37.48722°N 95.47611°W / 37.48722; -95.47611 (37.487127, -95.476237).[9] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.80 square miles (2.07 km2). Of that, 0.75 square miles (1.94 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.[2]

Thayer has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Thayer has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[10]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 432 people, 191 households, and 131 families living in Thayer. Of the households, 62.8% owned their home and 37.2% rented their home.

The median age was 41.5 years. Of the people, 89.1% were White, 0.9% were Native American, 0.5% were from some other race, and 9.5% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the people.[3][11]
