The Rise of the Great Powers
The Rise of the Great Powers is a 12-part Chinese documentary series made by CCTV. It first aired on CCTV-2 from 13 to 24 November 2006.[1] The show talks about the rise of nine powerful countries: Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Russia (Soviet Union), and the United States.
The People's Daily, a state-run newspaper, said each of the 12 episodes was shown at 9:30 p.m. and lasted 50 minutes, with a total runtime of 600 minutes.[2] The documentary featured interviews with well-known historians and scholars, like Paul Kennedy, author of The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, and Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist.[2] It also included interviews with political leaders such as former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.[2]
