Tonganoxie, Kansas
Tonganoxie (pronounced /tɒŋɡəˈnɒksi/)[4] is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area within the United States. In 2020, 5,573 people lived there.[3]

History
changeTonganoxie was platted in 1866.[5][6] It was named after a local Native American Chief from the Delaware Tribe whose name means "shorty" in the Delaware language.[7] Tonganoxie was incorporated as a city in the late 1870s.[8]
Geography
changeTonganoxie is at 39°6′32″N 95°5′13″W / 39.10889°N 95.08694°W (39.108880, -95.086885).[9] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 4.09 square miles (10.59 km2). Of that, 4.05 square miles (10.49 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[2]

changeTonganoxie has hot, humid summers and generally cold winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Tonganoxie has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[10]

2020 census
changeThe 2020 census says that there were 5,573 people, 2,087 households, and 1,482 families living in Tonganoxie. Of the households, 71.1% owned their home and 28.9% rented their home.
The median age was 36.0 years. Of the people, 87.3% were White, 1.5% were Black, 0.8% were Native American, 0.6% were Asian, 1.5% were from some other race, and 8.2% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the people.[11][12]
